North WiltshireMalmesbury

Malmesbury, the main town in this area of North Wiltshire, separated from the rest by the M4. Sited on a hill it was the first borough in England, created in 880 and once was fortified.

Famous for its abbey, which was sold after the Dissolution and used as a source of building materials. The remains of the abbey can be seen, and is slightly famous as in 1025 Brother Oliver tried to fly from the roof, he glided 200 yards but broke both legs. The abbey has a green in front as well as an old pub, the Old Bell.

Most of the old buildings in Malmesbury remain, including the Abbey House, which is private, Abbey Mill, down by the river, and weavers cottages. There are river walks, but a wandering around the town is the best way to explore this attractive town and feel its history.

Once a market town with a railway, there are a considerable number of pubs and the High Street has most types of shops.
