North WiltshireMarlborough

Marlborough, the wide High Street sweeps through this market town, excellent as a base to discover the remains of Ancient Britain.

The markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and there is the annual Mop Fair in October.

Georgian and Tudor buildings are here to be enjoyed, as the river Kennet flows through the town. It once an important stop for stagecoaches, and the number of inns reflect this. There was a fire in 1653, but medieval buildings still remain today in the small alleys. The Merchant's House, 1656, is being restored.

St Peter's and St Mary's churches are worth a quick look, as is Marlborough College founded in 1843, at the end of the High Street.
