North WiltshireTrowbridge

Trowbridge, set next to the little river Biss, the town is the county town of Wiltshire.

Its growth was based on the wool trade, although there was a castle here in the 12th century. The town has continued to grow with more housing estates added on the outside of town.

One of its famous residents was Sir Isaac Pitman, the inventor of shorthand, and his work and life is shown in the museum

The town is a regional shopping centre and has a covered market and the Shires Shopping Centre. Although busy it has good parking and pedestrianised streets.

If you have the time there is a town trail which highlights the mills and the houses of the mill owners. To the east of the town you can relax in the ancient woodlands of Green Lane Wood.

Tourist Information Centre in the town.
