Warminster
|
|
| Warminster,
on the western edge of the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, the
town was once an important market town, its prosperity based
on wool, cloth and corn.
Fought over in the Civil War the town supported James II
against the Monmouth rebellion.
Today Warminster is a good base to explore the countryside,
including Bath, Stonehenge, Longleat and Bradford-on-Avon.
Also well known as a UFO "hot spot" so keep your
eyes peeled!
Warminster has a park and boating lake, and Shearwater, on
the A350 is a popular spot.
The town hall is a
building of note, built in 1837 by the Marquis of Bath to
a design reproducing a wing of Longleat house. Also
St Denys Church,14th century, St. Lawrence Chapel, 13th century
and Warminster School which dates from 1707 are worth
a look.
Tourist Information Centre in
the town.
