Set right on the Welsh-English border, Chirk is an attractive little town, known for its wonderful castle and canal.
The castle was built in 1310 to guard this crucial defensive position, but was adapted over time to become a comfortable and grand stately home. Now cared for by the National Trust, its looming castellated facade still speaks of its military past.
Picturesque Llangollen Canal passes through the town, travelling over the lovely 1801 Chirk Aqueduct designed by Thomas Telford. Just to the north is the famous Pontcysyllte aqueduct which takes the canal an amazing 126ft over the valley floor, and now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can hire boats at Chirk, or take a day trip from nearby Llangollen.
Chirk is also a good base for walking the unspoilt Ceiriog Valley stretching to the West, as well as the Offa's Dyke long distance footpath.
