Worthing, a peaceful coastal holiday resort town, less built up than Brighton further along the coast.

It grew with the patronage of George III in around 1760, his family's visits made the town popular.

The 18th century terraces of houses remain, and the town has a pier and a pebble beach. There are two theatres.

Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, Chapel Road, a local museum which also has a sculpture garden, displays of costume, fine and decorative art, archaeology, local history, shop, etc. Tel: 01903 233999

Highdown Chalk Gardens, Littlehampton Road, Worthing, A2032 or A27 then A280, west if the town, a chalk garden with good views towards the sea and Downs. Old Shoreham, Shoreham by Sea, A27 east, has A few buildings of note; Lancing College Chapel and the Norman Marlipins in the High Street, now a museum.

Cissbury Ring, drive to Findon on the A24 then follow the signs and then walk to this Iron Age fort.
